RESHMA KHAN

Founder of Shifa Clinic

@SHIFACLINIC_MTPLEASANT                       @THESHIFACLINIC                                                              SHIFACLINICS.COM

WHAT IS SOMETHING YOU'D LIKE PEOPLE TO KNOW ABOUT YOU?

My motvation in life is to benefit and help others.

WHAT IS YOUR MESSAGE FOR THE COMMUNITY?

I would say to invest your time in the community, give your time and your talents. Whatever you're able to do will be very beneficial. While your work helps others, it really has a lasting impact on you. When you are able to help someone, you are the blessed one. God could have chosen any person to help, but you have been given an opportunity.

WHICH POPULATION(S) IN THE TRI-COUNTY DO YOU BELIEVE ARE MOST AT RISK?

The Hispanic population. Eighty percent of our patients served are Hispanic. The lack of health literacy is probably the greatest contributing factor to their need. Often we see that these patients struggle with not only understanding the disease, whether it be diabetes or hypertension, but also the disease processes.

Since we don't have zip code restriction, we see this populations travleing from Goose Creek, Ladson, Walterboro even, and sometimes from Beaufort, to as far up as McClellanville. Every so often we will run a report on zip codes served and some we may not even know where the zip codes are located.

WHAT DO YOU FEEL SHIFA CLINIC'S GREATEST STRENGTHS ARE?

Number one before we even mention services, is diversity. The volunteers and patients at this clinic are not of one particular faith, ethnic background, economic status. As I always say, there may be people who cannot understand your language but love, respect and care are universal languages. People know your heart.

In terms of services, is gynecology. We don't charge patients for any service whether it's a prenatal visit, routine annual exam, colposcopy, etc. Within our gynecology services we also focus on birth control education and providing various birth control methods. We want every pregnancy to be a planned pregnancy. This goes hand in hand with our ability to offer pediatric care. It is often difficult to find pediatric care free of cost so we are really happy to be able to provide this to the community.

I would also say that we have strength in our diabetes education program. At the end of this year we will be releasing data on our successes in this area.

@charlestonpd                          @cityofcharlestonpd                       charleston-sc.gov/303/police-department

WHAT IS SOMETHING YOU'D LIKE PEOPLE TO KNOW ABOUT YOU?

My family moved here from Maryland and we have fallen in love with Charleston. We feel very welcomed by the faith community here, having been welcomed into so many churches as we were getting established after the move.

WHAT ARE THREE TRAITS THAT DEFINE YOU?

Family, faith and fitness.

i notice that you've got a couple of medals and photos of you running marathons.

For a while I was running marathons because I challenged myself to run 10 marathons in a year. I've run an ultra-marathon (50mi) and as someone who doesn't actually like to run, that was tough. My most recent run was the Cooper River Bridge Run that I did with my neighbor who knew that I had run marathons and was interested in doing the Bridge Run, so we did that together. I've moved on from running and I'm now taking kite surfing lessons.

which healthy tri-county/find your fit focus area do you most identify with? why?

Obesity, Nutrition and Phsyical Activity. I consdier fitness an integral part of my day. I wake up at 530am to get to the gym to make sure that I have made time for my well-being each day. It takes discipline and commitment. What I could definitely do better which is the nutrition side of things. That is one of those aspects of wellness that fall to the wayside in this job, and for most officers, because you often don't have time to sit and eat a meal, and when you do it's usually something quick. Also, this is the South where all of the food is good - I don't think I've had a bad meal since moving here.

WHAT ARE THREE TRAITS THAT DEFINE YOU?

Hardworker, skilled in time management and integrity.

HOW DO YOU ALREADY MAKE CONSCIOUS EFFORTS TO IMPROVE YOUR OWN HEALTH OR THE HEALTH OF YOUR FAMILY/FRIENDS?

I schedule in workouts and training sessions throughout my week to make sure I stay as fit and healthy as I can. My family and I get regular check-ups and eat healthy meals. I constantly monitor my weight so that I can be conscious of my eating habits.

What would you say to the residents of the counties you represent to encourage them to take action and ownership of their wellbeing?

Healthy individuals make happy and productive individuals. When we eat right, exercise and get enough sleep, we can reduce stress and accomplish whatever we need to during the day to become good role models for our children and families. If you're like me, I want to live as long as possible so I can spend time with my children.

Kimberlyn Davis

Motivated Mom, Marketer Extraordinaire, #GirlWhoLifts

@Kimberlyn_Davis

WHAT IS SOMETHING YOU'D LIKE PEOPLE TO KNOW ABOUT YOU?

My family has always been extremely active. When I was growing up, my mom would always walk around the neighborhood in the mornings and evenings. My dad would play racquetball and golf with his friends. I remember taking long bike rides with my dad on the weekends. Additionally, my parents had me in tap, ballet and gymnastics until I was 10 years old, and then in my teenage years, I ran track. Even though I have been extremely active throughout my life, I suffer from allergies and asthma, like many people in this area.

What are three traits that define you?

Motivated, positive and consistent.

How do you already make conscious efforts to improve your own health or the health of your family/friends?

Currently, I am weight lifting which is something that I have enjoyed since I was a teenager (we had to lift weights as a part of our track conditioning). Usually I lift 4 to 6 days a week for about 1 hour a day. In addition to lifting, I do about 10-15 minutes of cardio on either the step mill, elliptical or treadmill.

how has being a mom changed the way that you look at health, and even the health of the communities in which you are raising your children?

I want to be a positive, healthy example for my kids. We don't eat clean every night, we practice moderation and having a healthy relationship with food. The only "food" I don't tolerate well is candy. I don't keep candy in my house.

Holy City Sinner

       @holycitysinner                  /holycitysinner                      @HOLYCITYSINNER               Holycitysinner.com

See christian's post about find your fit on holy city sinner here!

WHAT IS SOMETHING YOU'D LIKE PEOPLE TO KNOW ABOUT YOU?

I'd be happy for people to know that Holy City Sinner is my passion project - it's something that I do for fun. The things I talk about are the things that I support and appreciate; there is no other agenda than shining a light on something I think you should check out.

How did Holy City Sinner Come to be?

I moved here 11 years ago, and after a few years, I started to realize that there was so much more to do than you might be aware of through traditional news and media sources. I thought there was a chance for me to start a blog to talk about things that I really like doing in Charleston, from the big events we all know about to the small ones that maybe you've never heard of.

When I originally started I wanted to stay anonymous which led to the creation of the Holy City Sinner. I knew that I wanted to play off of the 'Holy City' nickname for Charleston because there is so much history that the name represents, but I also wanted to reflect the side of the city that's a bit darker and likes to party. It's a fun name that represents both sides of the city. Thankfully people seem to like it and get that it's tongue in cheek.

how do you balance being both holy city sinner and christian senger?

It was hard at first because I felt like I needed to go to every event but since so many stay the same year to year, it became easier for me to pick and choose where I want to go so I'm not always out and about. As long as I am still providing information to people, I've come to realize I don't need to stretch myself too thin. That said, I won't give a personal opinion about something unless I've been there myself.

For me, this is where my passion for mental health first came in. I had to recognize when I was getting in the weeds when it came to pushing content, needing to take a step back and knowing that I don't need to be everything to everyone.

as you've developed holy city sinner, have you noticed any impact on your mental health?

Yes. I've dealt with having social anxiety for some time and starting Holy City Sinner pushed me (after being anonymous for a while) to work on that because I wanted to be more involved, and I was getting questions about who is HCS. It got me out of my comfort zone by having to meet with new people and try new things. It helped me to realize that there was so much that I could do that I may have ordinarily been too scared or nervous to do prior.

All in all, the good has far outweighed the bad. There are still some minor stresses but I have to come back to knowing that this is something that I do for fun and it's okay to take a step back and say 'no' to some things.

Anchor/Reporter for Live 5 News (WCSC)

            @Lisalive5                      /lisaweismannlive5                   /lisaweismann

WHAT IS SOMETHING YOU'D LIKE PEOPLE TO KNOW ABOUT YOU?

Despite the fact that I talk for a living, I consider myself to be a quiet observant person. My co-anchor, Raphael James, and I laugh about the fact that we both call ourselves introverts. You'd never get that sense by watching our broadcasts!

WHAT ARE THREE TRAITS THAT DEFINE YOU?

Dependable, driven and caring.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE THING ABOUT HAVING A CAREER IN NEWS MEDIA?

I step into the Live 5 newsroom each afternoon with a world of possibility before me. I may be sent to a different county to file live reports from a breaking news scene or I may be rushed out to the desk to anchor continuous coverage for a strech of hours. Every day on the job can be so vastly different - and I love it.

WHICH HEALTHY TRI-COUNTY/FIND YOUR FIT FOCUS AREA DO YOU MOST IDENTIFY WITH? WHY?

Behavioral Health - Whether I am paging through police reports or interviewing survivors of suicide, I see firsthand the far-reaching ramifications of behavioral health. Journalists can be exposed to the worst sides of humanity and we need to proactively care for our mental health, even if that means booking time with a counselor. As a whole, it's so imperative that we increase access to proven mental health programs AND reduce the stigma associated with seeking such services.

WHAT IS SOMETHING YOU'D LIKE PEOPLE TO KNOW ABOUT YOU?

I grew up on a farm in Williamsburg county, so it was easy staying fit.  We were always doing something physical on the farm.  We grew our own vegetables, had to work the fields and take care of the animals.  Growing up, I always wished my parents had reared us in a city, but when I became an adult, I appreciated my farm upbringing so much. Fresh, clean food, hard work and the value of community.

What are three traits that define you?

Spiritual, hardworking and frugal.

WHAT is your favorite thing about having a career in news media?

Being able to bring the stories of the Lowcountry to life, and to deliver information to people when they need it.  It’s a wonderful way to learn about all this area has to offer, and to interact with people from all walks of life.

Which healthy tri-county/find your fit focus area do you most identify with? why?

Obesity, Nutrition & Physical Activity - Food plays such an important role in every aspect of our lives. When we have enough to eat, especially healthy food, we feel better. Add in physical activity which helps us sleep better, and you have the perfect combination for health. When we are healthy, we think clearer, manage stress better and are more effective in everything that we do. Obesity robs us of good health and brings on complications that can make day to day activities challenging. Being mindful of our health in anyway that we can puts us closer to enjoying life.
